The Menkes List.
The research conducted in this study explores how women have been, and still are, exploited in film through sexualisation and objectification. Key themes identified during the project’s journey focused on the sexualisation and objectification of women in film and sexual violence on-screen. Initially inspired by research on the representation of women in advertising and Film Noir, the project combined these areas resulting in the research topic included in this study. The primary analysis of images and secondary sources was utilised to create an artefact to raise audience awareness of how the film industry exploits women. The final resolution focuses on the work of Nina Menkes and supplies content besides imagery using graphic design to explain and present the issues present in film.
The final artefact resulted in a single publication focusing on the exploitation of women in film through sexualisation and objectification. The topic covered is The Menkes List which contains the shot design techniques used to objectify women on screen. The design of the resolution pays homage to the history of
